Madurai City Police have introduced foot patrolling of older days again to increase the visibility of policing.Instructed by the new Director General of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggrawal, the city police started foot patrolling since Wednesday night.Senior police officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Madurai North) S. Madhivanan marched on the different roads.“We chose to walk through crowded places like MGR Bus Stand and market. We could see for ourselves some traffic issues and were able to set them right,” Mr. Madhivanan said. The police also walked to tea shops that were kept open late in the night.“The presence of senior police officers would give a sense of confidence to the people and also to the other personnel in night duty,” he added.Foot patrolling would not be restricted to night duty alone, but also during day time, he added. The new iniative will be along with the existing two-wheeler and four-wheeler patrolling. While officials at the rank of Deputy Commissioners would take it up once or twice every week, the Assistant Commissioners and Inspectors and other police personnel would walk through the streets in their jurisdiction every day, he added.
