The Office of the Attorney General has moved to dispel what it described as misinformation circulating on social media, clarifying that the State of Emergency (SOE) remains in force until midnight on June 17, 2026.In a statement issued on Wednesday, the office said claims suggesting the SOE expires today, June 3, were inaccurate and did not reflect the constitutional provisions governing the emergency measures."The Office of the Attorney General seeks to clarify misinformation currently circulating on certain social media platforms regarding the duration of the ongoing State of Public Emergency," the statement said. The office explained that the State of Emergency was first declared by presidential proclamation through Legal Notice No. 39 of 2026, with effect from March 3, 2026.Under Section 9(2) of the Constitution, the proclamation initially remained in force for 15 days and would have expired at midnight on March 17.However, the Attorney General's Office noted that the House of Representatives approved an extension before the expiry date."In accordance with Section 10(1) of the Constitution, the Proclamation was extended by a simple majority resolution of the House of Representatives on March 13, 2026, for a period of three months with effect from March 18, 2026 and ending at midnight on June 17, 2026," the statement said. The clarification comes amid widespread discussion online over the status of the emergency regulations, with some social media posts incorrectly stating that the SOE would end on June 3.The State of Emergency was declared in response to ongoing concerns over crime and national security and has been accompanied by a series of emergency regulations granting law enforcement additional powers. The Attorney General's Office urged members of the public to rely on official sources for information relating to the State of Emergency and other legal matters. As it stands, the emergency measures remain legally in effect for another two weeks, with the current extension scheduled to expire at midnight on June 17 unless further action is taken in accordance with the Constitution.
