Kudirat Abiola | Heels of Influence
President of the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy, Dr Hafsat Abiola, and President of Women Arise, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, have urged Nigerians to embrace collective action and grassroots organisation as a means of driving democratic and social change.
The duo made the call in a joint statement on Wednesday to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the assassination of Kudirat Abiola, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle and the wife of the late winner of the June 12, 1993, election, Chief MKO Abiola.
The statement read, “This June 4 marks the 30th anniversary of the death of our mum and dear friend, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, who was assassinated on the orders of the then military regime.”
Kudirat was gunned down in Lagos on June 4, 1996, while her husband, M.K.O Abiola, was in detention ordered by the military head of state, the late Sani Abacha, in the heat of the crisis stemming from the annulment of the presidential election.
