Thirty years after the assassination of pro-democracy activist Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, her daughter, Dr. Hafsat Abiola, and women's rights activist Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin have called on Nigerians to honour her legacy by promoting democratic values and grassroots civic engagement.

In a joint statement issued on Wednesday to mark the 30th anniversary of Kudirat Abiola's death, the two activists paid tribute to her role in the struggle against military rule, describing her as a symbol of courage who sacrificed her life in the fight for democracy.

Kudirat Abiola, wife of the late winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief M.K.O. Abiola, was assassinated on June 4, 1996, during the military regime of the late General Sani Abacha.

Reflecting on her life and sacrifice, the statement said, “This June 4 marks the 30th anniversary of the death of our mum and dear friend, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, who was assassinated on the orders of the then military regime.”
