A fire broke out Wednesday morning in an apartment in the Korydallos district of southwest Athens, but was quickly brought under control by firefighters, authorities said.
The blaze started shortly after 10 a.m. on Ithakis and Doiranis streets. Fifteen firefighters with four vehicles were deployed, and a resident of the building climbed to the rooftop to escape the flames before being assisted by emergency crews. A specialized aerial vehicle was also dispatched.
Preliminary reports suggested the fire may have been caused by a candle left burning in an apartment where a woman had recently died, with funeral arrangements reportedly taking place the same day.
No serious injuries were reported.
