Greece is preparing legislation to tighten ATV regulations after a string of deadly accidents on islands, including the death of a 42-year-old British tourist in Corfu whose vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and crashed into an olive grove, killing him while his 15-year-old child rode alongside.
The Ministry of Infrastructure’s draft law would restrict ATV rentals to drivers holding a license for at least five years, or impose a minimum age of 25. Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis has also warned rental companies that providing vehicles without helmets is prohibited and that rules “will be tightened further.”
Police data shows 46 ATVs were involved in Greek road accidents in 2025, three of them fatal. Driving instructor Aris Zografos called ATVs “moving traps,” warning they possess neither “the active safety of a motorcycle nor the passive safety of a car.”
