Greece is weighing tighter regulations on electric scooters and a possible ban on quad bikes in tourist areas, Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis said Saturday, citing rising road safety concerns during the summer travel season.

In an interview with statebroadcaster ERT, Chrysochoidis said the use of electric scooters by minors and broader safety rules for adults are under review, including speed limiters, bans on use on highways and major roads, mandatory insurance, safety certification and clearer municipal oversight.

He also said local authorities could be tasked with setting caps on the number of scooters allowed per area to curb what he described as uncontrolled proliferation.

Turning to quad bikes on Greek islands, the minister said he would prefer an outright ban, arguing the vehicles are linked to a growing number of serious and sometimes fatal accidents, particularly involving tourists.

He said helmet use should be mandatory and included in rental agreements as an immediate safety measure.
