The case was brought by communities in the Niger Delta who are seeking to hold Shell liable for pollution linked to more than 100 oil leaks between 2011 and 2013.

Internal documents obtained by the BBC show that British oil giant Shell plc continued operating a major oil pipeline in Nigeria for years despite internal warnings about the environmental risks posed by widespread oil theft and infrastructure failures.

According to the BBC, the documents, which include emails and presentations disclosed as part of ongoing legal proceedings in the United Kingdom, reveal that a senior Shell executive raised concerns as far back as 2008 about continuing operations on the Nembe Creek Trunk Line while it was vulnerable to large-scale theft and damage.

The case was brought by communities in the Niger Delta who are seeking to hold Shell liable for pollution linked to more than 100 oil leaks between 2011 and 2013.

The communities are demanding $1 billion in damages, including $250 million in compensation and $750 million for environmental remediation.
