The protesters, who marched to the Government House carrying placards with inscriptions such as "An Attack on Teachers is an Attack on Education," called on authorities at all levels to intensify efforts to secure the freedom of the victims and improve security around schools across the country.

Teachers under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Enugu State on Tuesday staged a protest at the Enugu State Government House, demanding the immediate release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted by gunmen in Oyo State.

The protesters, who marched to the Government House carrying placards with inscriptions such as "An Attack on Teachers is an Attack on Education," called on authorities at all levels to intensify efforts to secure the freedom of the victims and improve security around schools across the country.

The protest comes amid growing concerns over the fate of dozens of pupils, students, teachers and school staff abducted from schools in Oyo State and other parts of Nigeria, including Borno and Niger states.

Addressing officials at the Government House, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Enugu State, Chief Theophilus N. Odo, said the union was acting on directives from the national headquarters of the NUT to draw attention to the plight of the abducted teachers and students.
