Livestock farmers in the Kangayam-Dharapuram belt have urged the Animal Husbandry Ministry to put in place effective measures to safeguard them from fatalities of their goats and sheep caused due to attack by wandering dogs.A group of farmers recently called on the Animal Husbandry Minister S. Kamali, seeking compensation on market rates for the livestock killed by the dogs.The fatalities of livestock had caused extreme hardship to the farmers dependent on the goats and sheep for livelihood over the last decade, the petition they submitted to the Minister said.The compensation of ₹6,000 for a dead goat/sheep fixed by the government was insufficient, and there was a delay on the part of the government in making the settlement, the petition said, urging the Ministry to build permanent shelters for the wandering dogs.
