Yiza Ekhaya soup kitchen in, kuyasa, Khayelitsha

Originally from the Eastern Cape, 72-year-old Mickey Winfred Linda, affectionately known as Mama Mickey, moved to Cape Town in pursuit of better opportunities. She established her soup kitchen with a deep-seated desire to support her community.

The inspiration for this initiative came from a poignant encounter with a young man she saw crawling home from a clinic.

Mama Mickey recalled: "I walked up to him to find out what was the problem and he said he had taken his medication without eating as he had nothing to eat". Distressed by his struggle, she felt compelled to act.
