For thousands of South African children, hunger remains a daily reality that affects far more than an empty stomach. It impacts their ability to learn, concentrate, play and experience the simple joys of childhood.

PepsiCo Southern Africa, through its community-focused bread brand SASKO, has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling food insecurity among children through a range of nutrition programmes and community initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable families across the country.

The renewed focus comes as child hunger and malnutrition continue to pose a significant challenge in South Africa. According to UNICEF, nearly a quarter of children in the country live in severe food poverty, while only 21% of children under the age of five receive a minimum acceptable diet.

As part of its ongoing efforts, SASKO employees recently participated in a nationwide community outreach initiative across the company's 12 bakeries, preparing fresh sandwiches and engaging with children at Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres. Activities included educational and recreational programmes designed to promote learning, kindness and community support.

However, PepsiCo SA says the initiative represents just one component of a much broader long-term commitment to combating hunger among children.
