DA councillors say they will continue pursuing accountability after suspensions in eThekwini, alleging procurement irregularities and poor oversight in a programme aimed at supporting vulnerable residents.

The eThekwini Municipality has reportedly suspended its Community Participation Director, Vincent Cebekhulu, and his deputy, Lindani Sicwala, following allegations of irregularities linked to the city’s soup kitchen programme.

In a statement, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in eThekwini welcomed the reported suspensions, saying they followed concerns the party had previously raised about the implementation and management of the programme.

Speaking to IOL, eThekwini Municipality Marketing and Communications Director Mandla Nsele did not confirm the suspensions.

“As a matter of principle, the City does not engage in discussions regarding employer-employee relations with third parties, as doing so would contravene the provisions of the Labour Relations Act,” Nsele said.
