The latest Ebola outbreak spreading across the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda is once again exposing the fragility of global health systems and the unequal nature of international responses to African crises.
With more than 220 reported dead in eastern DRC and fresh infections emerging in Uganda, the World Health Organisation has already classified the outbreak as serious. Yet, instead of inspiring coordinated global action, the epidemic is rapidly becoming a symbol of fear, isolation and geopolitical self-interest.
Uganda, having experienced repeated outbreaks of haemorrhagic fevers over the years, moved quickly after two infected travellers from the DRC sought treatment in Kampala and later died.
