TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto on Monday called for a transformation of Indonesia’s economic model toward one more closely aligned with the principles of Pancasila, arguing that the country’s economic growth has yet to be enjoyed equally by all Indonesians.Speaking at the Pancasila Day commemoration ceremony in Jakarta, Prabowo said Indonesia needed to move from an economy that is “not yet fully based on Pancasila” to one that better reflects the state ideology’s values.“Transformation from an economy that is not yet fully based on Pancasila toward an economy that truly embodies Pancasila,” Prabowo said.“What does a Pancasila-based economy mean? First, it is an economy that is religious, humane, and strengthens national unity.”The remarks came as Prabowo's administration continues to promote economic policies that it says are intended to boost growth, reduce inequality, and expand social welfare programs.Prabowo said Indonesia’s natural resources should be managed responsibly for the benefit of the nation and future generations, describing them as a trust that must contribute to broad-based prosperity. He argued that economic development should be measured not only by growth figures and statistical indicators but also by improvements in people’s daily lives.According to Prabowo, this includes providing better nutrition for vulnerable communities, ensuring fertilizer support for farmers, improving market access for fishermen, and strengthening protections for workers. The president also said Indonesia’s economy should prioritize national and public interests rather than primarily benefiting a small group of people.“A Pancasila economy is an egalitarian, people-oriented economy. Our economic system is based on the blueprint laid out by the nation’s founders,” he said.Prabowo referred to Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution, which stipulates that the economy should be organized as a collective endeavor based on the principle of mutual cooperation and that the state should control natural resources and key sectors of production for the public interest. He also emphasized the importance of social justice as a foundation of economic policy, saying economic progress should be distributed more evenly across society.“We no longer want to talk only about development. We now have a more ambitious goal,” Prabowo said.“We are implementing, and will continue to implement, a national transformation strategy that is aligned with the principles of Pancasila.”Read: Prabowo, Former Leaders Attend 2026 Pancasila Day Ceremony
