Three members of a family, including a woman and a 14-year-old boy, were injured after they were attacked with a sickle by a man in Mayiladuthurai on Sunday morning. The accused later surrendered at the Mayiladuthurai police station.Police said the injured were identified as Selvam, 50, a jewellery appraiser working at a bank in Kumbakonam, his wife Karpagam, 42, and their son Kaviyarasan, 14, of Arubathumoovar Pettai South Street in Mayiladuthurai.According to the police, Karpagam was drawing water from a public tap near her house when Ashok, 25, son of DMK councillor Jayalakshmi Murugan and a resident of the opposite house, allegedly attacked her with a sickle because of enmity between the two families.Mr. Selvam and Kaviyarasan suffered cuts when they attempted to prevent the attack. All three were admitted to the Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital for treatment. Ms. Karpagam was later referred to the Thanjavur Government Medical College and Hospital. Selvam received more than 10 stitches, police said.Ashok later surrendered before the Mayiladuthurai police alleging he too had been attacked with a knife by members of Mr. Selvam’s family. Police took him to the Government Hospital for treatment.Police sources said the two families had frequent quarrels while collecting drinking water from the public tap. An investigation is under way.
