In a shocking incident, a 36-year-old man allegedly killed his estranged wife and her mother with an ‘aruval’ and surrendered before the police in Ramanathapuram district on Thursday.The police said Chellamuthu, 36, of Mariamman Koi Street was married to Sharmila, 30. They had a son and daughter, aged 10 and 8 respectively. Chellamuthu had worked overseas as an electrician, and returned home last year.Preliminary inquiries revealed that Chellamuthu returned home after he suspected the fidelity of his wife. The couple had frequent quarrels over the issue, and sometimes Chellamuthu used to assault Sharmila.The couple decided to separate and had moved court for divorce, the police said. Sharmila was living with her daughter at Vaigai Nagar, Pattinamkaathan, while Chellamuthu was living alone in Ram Nagar.Chellamuthu came to Sharmila’s house on Thursday and after a fight with her, he pulled out an ‘aruval’ and assaulted her, in which she died on the spot. Her mother Padmavathi alias Fatima, 55, who was living in Dubai, had come here only a week ago. When she tried to save her daughter, she too received injuries and died.Chellamuthu surrendered before the police. He was arrested and produced before a Judicial Magistrate Court. The two bodies were sent to Government Ramanathapuram Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.Based on a complaint from Prabhu, son of Padmavathi, the police registered a case.
