Testing the potable water at periodic intervals was mandatory and engineers at the Municipal level should adhere to the guidelines, said (Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage) TWAD Board Managing Director Dinesh Ponraj Oliver.After taking over as the MD of the Board, he visited Virudhunagar District for the first time. He reviewed ongoing works on Friday in the presence of District Collector N. O. Sukhaputra, TWAD Board chief engineer Ganesan and other officers at the Collectorate.Speaking at the meeting, he appealed to the engineers at the municipal level to test the water for quality at periodic intervals. He also urged the contracting firms to stick to the timeline and expedite the works.He admitted that there were issues with regard to fund allocation, problems in water distribution, fluctuations in electricity et al. However, he said that the officials had the responsibility of delivering the basic needs to the residents and the government was answerable to the tax paying citizens on the delivery.Hence, the officials should look at solving the problems and thus instill confidence among the masses that the government would execute the welfare schemes irrespective of hurdles.He suggested digging new borewells or checking the defunct ones and examining the feasibility of reviving them. In the case of establishing new STPs and UGDs, Mr Dinesh underlined the need for innovation and new designs which would hold good for the next 10 to 20 years. In terms of population and relevance, the technocrats should bring out the facilities, he added.He was briefed about the UGD project under way in Aruppukottai Municipality at an outlay of ₹297.25 crore and on the Tamirabharani drinking water scheme to the municipalities in the district.
