TACLOBAN CITY— Seeking to improve rice production and reduce farmers’ dependence on expensive fuel-powered irrigation, the provincial government of Northern Samar is pushing for the installation of 19 solar-powered irrigation systems (SPIS) across farming communities in the province.

The Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO), in coordination with the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM), has completed site validations in several municipalities.

These activities are part of the province’s bid to secure the solar-powered irrigation units under a national government program aimed at modernizing agriculture and strengthening food security.

Northern Samar remains largely dependent on rain-fed farming, making rice production vulnerable to prolonged dry spells and changing weather patterns.
