TACLOBAN CITY — More than 200 farmers in Eastern Samar are testing modern rice production technologies across 150 hectares of farmland in what the Department of Agriculture (DA) hopes will become a model for increasing yields, lowering production costs, and strengthening the province’s food security.
According to the regional office of the Department of Agriculture (DA-8), it officially launched the Rice Derby 2026 during ceremonies held on July 30 in Barangay Gap-ang, Dolores, in partnership with the provincial government of Eastern Samar, although the demonstration farms were already established during the March planting season.
The project covers 150 hectares involving more than 200 farmer-cooperators from different parts of Dolores, considered among the province’s rice granaries.
The demonstration fields will serve as testing sites where various rice production technologies will be evaluated under actual farming conditions before the harvest, which is scheduled in October.
