DAVAO CITY — The Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) clarified that the White-bellied Sea Eagle rescued by residents on May 27 in Barangay Tinocdugan, northwestern Leyte is not one of the Philippine eagles previously released for a reintroduction program in Eastern Visayas.

Dr. Jayson Ibanez, PEF director for operations, told the Inquirer that based on the bird’s morphology and plummage, the rescued raptor is a sub-adult White-bellied Sea Eagle and not a Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) as initially reported.

“We commend the swift and compassionate efforts of the Ormoc DRRM (Disaster Risk Reduction and Management) Office and all responders involved in rescuing the distressed eagle found along the shoreline,” Ibañez said.

“Such actions reflect the growing public concern for and care of our country’s wildlife,” he observed.
