Raids on Roma camps west of Athens have uncovered extensive illegal hookups to the power network and a series of traffic violations, police said Friday.

Electricity workers who accompanied officers during Thursday’s operation around Aspropyrgos disconnected some 2.7 kilometers of cables used for the illegal mains connections, according to a police statement.

Nine people were arrested on suspicion of electricity theft and domestic violence.

Police said 29 fines were issued for highway code violations including driving without a license, not wearing seatbelts or crash helmets and lacking Ministry of Transport vehicle maintenance certificates.

“The purpose of the broad operation was to forestall and address every form of illegal activity that has been registered in the area,” the police statement said.
