Ten people were arrested for illegal power hookups Wednesday during a police raid on Roma camps east of Athens, authorities said.

A police statement said electricity company employees who accompanied police in the operation near Spata removed some 300 meters of cables used to illegally link homes to the power grid without ever paying for the electricity consumed.

It said the crackdown was intended to “prevent and address every form of illegal activity recorded in these areas, with a view to strengthening the public’s sense of security and protecting public property.”

In a string of similar raids in the southern Peloponnese region on Tuesday, five people were arrested for illegal power grid hookups.
