The union representing support staff at York’s public school board says nearly 250 positions are being cut as the board faces a steep decline in enrolment.CUPE Local 1734 announced Thursday that the York Region District School Board recently notified them of plans to eliminate 249 positions. The cuts include more than 201 educational assistants, 36 secretarial and administrative staff, six information technology workers, and six library technicians. While the board would not confirm those exact numbers, it noted that enrolment was down by 1,500 students this year, and next year’s count is projected to decline by another 6,389.
