Progressive Bulgaria (PB) has proposed fixing the base salary of Members of Parliament at 4,326 euros per month, removing the current automatic link between MPs’ pay and the national average wage.

The proposal was outlined by Stefan Belchev, an MP and member of the parliamentary budget and finance committee, in an interview with bTV. He explained that future salary adjustments would only be possible through the annual State Budget Act, effectively locking parliamentary pay at a fixed level.

“With this proposal, we are practically fixing salaries at one level,” Belchev said, adding that the aim is to bring predictability and stability to MPs’ remuneration.

Alongside the salary reform, Belchev also commented on planned changes to the National Assembly’s rules of procedure. He said the intention behind the reforms is to restore what he described as normal functioning in parliament and improve the efficiency of legislative work.

“In recent years, the parliament has been more of a show than a place for creative actions,” he stated, arguing that the new rules are designed to improve order and productivity.
