Petar Vitanov, MP from "Progressive Bulgaria" stated that Bulgaria has now officially entered an excessive deficit procedure, adding that this requires urgent fiscal adjustments and institutional responses. Speaking to journalists in the National Assembly, he said the parliamentary group of “Progressive Bulgaria” will reopen the rules of procedure of the 52nd National Assembly in order to introduce a freeze on MPs’ remuneration.
He explained that the issue had been misrepresented in public debate. According to him, the reason such a freeze had not been introduced earlier was procedural, since the methodology proposed by the Ministry of Finance arrived after the deadline for amendments to the rules had already expired.
Vitanov also said that after the second reading of the Anti-Corruption Law, the National Assembly will again revisit its internal regulations and take additional steps aligned with the government’s broader approach, aimed at limiting automatic salary increases in the public sector and restraining wage growth among civil servants.
He added that he had not yet reviewed the full methodology proposed by the finance ministry.
Addressing the fiscal situation, Vitanov said the developments were expected and had been discussed for some time, but are now formally confirmed by the European Commission. He noted that the procedure involves intensified monitoring and the potential introduction of restrictive measures similar to those applied in other EU countries.
