A major surgical intervention at the Attappady Taluk Tribal Specialty Hospital at Kottathara has brought relief to a 69-year-old woman who had been struggling with a large abdominal cyst for nearly 25 years. The patient, a native of Sreekrishnapuram, had long suffered from persistent abdominal pain and increasing swelling caused by a colonic mesenteric cyst measuring about 30 cm×20 cm. Her condition had gradually worsened over decades. The medical team at the tribal hospital successfully removed the tumour through a complex procedure led by surgeon Mithun K., with anaesthesia support from Rahul S. and Varsha P.K. During the surgery, nearly four litres of fluid was drained before the cyst was fully excised.Hospital superintendent Shijin John Aloor said the surgery highlighted the expertise and teamwork at the tribal hospital, which plays a key role in delivering specialised health-care services to tribal communities in the remote Attappady region. He said the patient was stable and recovering in the post-operative ICU. She is being closely monitored, he said. Published - May 27, 2026 09:27 pm IST
