A team of surgeons at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) successfully removed a giant Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma weighing 15 kg from a 73-year-old man from Kallakurichi district in Tamil Nadu.According to a press release, the patient approached Jipmer with complaints of abdominal distention for one year and shortness of breath for six months. Evaluation revealed a large, predominantly fat containing mass, compressing the left ureter and engulfing the left kidney.In view of the ureteric involvement, the Department of Urology performed left ureteric DJ stenting on May 19. Subsequently, the patient underwent open surgical excision of the tumour the next day.A team of doctors led by Raj Kumar Nagarajan, Professor, Department of Surgery, along with Vimalraj (Senior Resident), Shubham (Junior Resident), and Siddu and anaesthesia team led by Sivashanmugam (consultant) performed the surgical procedure.They removed the tumour after operating for four-and-a-half hours. The excised tumour weighed 15 kg, which is third largest in India and second largest in South India. The patient was successfully extubated and is presently hemodynamically stable, the release added.
