VISAKHAPATNAMSurgeons at the government-run King George Hospital (KGH) have successfully performed a rare and complex urological surgery on a 37-year-old woman, removing massive bilateral adrenal tumours, weighing 4.5 kgs.The patient, T. Rajani, a resident of Vizianagaram district, had been suffering from progressive abdominal distension and severe pain for over a year. She was admitted to the Department of Urology at KGH on May 14.Following a series of advanced diagnostic investigations, clinical teams discovered massive growths in her adrenal glands on both sides. The tumour on the right side measured 6 cm, while the one on the left had grown to a staggering 28 cm.Rare Clinical ConditionAccording to medical experts, this specific presentation occurs in fewer than four individuals per lakh population. The condition was diagnosed as bilateral adrenal myelolipoma associated with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). Given the endocrine complexities involved, the patient was initially stabilised with medical management by the endocrinology team before being posted for surgery.A high-risk surgical procedure was successfully executed on May 19 by a team led by Dr. I. Chandrasekhar, Head of the Department of Urology.Speaking to media persons, Dr. Chandrasekhar noted that precautious preoperative management by the endocrinology wing played a vital role in the success of the operation.The surgical and care team included Dr. K. Srilakshmi (Head of Anaesthesia), Dr. Sharath Chandra (Assistant Professor of Anaesthesia), Dr. Appala Raju and Dr. Venkata Krishna (Assistant Professors of Urology), and postgraduate scholar Dr. Dattatreya.Hospital authorities confirmed that the patient has made a complete recovery post-surgery with stable vitals, and was discharged from the hospital on Thursday.
