NewsUK NewsMet OfficeThe Met Office has issued an urgent yellow warning for thunderstorms affecting the East Midlands and East of England, in place from Tuesday 10pm until Wednesday 2am22:01, 26 May 2026Updated 22:21, 26 May 2026The Met Office has issued an immediate weather warnings for seven areas of the UK set to be hit by thunderstorms within minutes.‌Brits are being told to prepare for potential downpours and flooding as thunderstorms are set to hit parts of the country following a record breaking heatwave.‌Up to 30mm of rain could fall within just half an hour in places along with 'frequent lightning' and even hail stones could batter parts of the UK. Thunderstorms could bring 'torrential rainfall' between 10pm on Tuesday May 26 until 2am on Wednesday May 27th, the Met Office has warned.‌Met Office forecast said: "An area of thunderstorms is moving eastwards and will clear later this evening or during the early hours of Wednesday. Where storms occur, heavy rain and frequent lightning is expected and 20 to 30 mm of rain may fall in 30 to 60 minutes in some places. Storms may also be accompanied by hail and gusty winds in a few spots."Homes and roads could face flooding and the Met Office has issued a 'danger to life' warning. Forecasters said: "There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life."High winds could cause damage to buildings and households are being told to ensure that bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences are secure. "Before strong gusts arrive, ensure any moveable objects or temporary structures are properly secured," the Met Office has said.‌The Met Office advises people seek shelter during intense thunderstorms and said: "If you find yourself outdoors and hear thunder, keep yourself safe by seeking a secure enclosed shelter, such as a car. Avoid sheltering under or near trees, or other structures that could be struck by lightning.
