MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Tuesday said it is aiming to improve the country’s active transport facilities, which include the establishment of more bicycle lanes, in an effort to reduce the number of road crash incidents.
During a road safety summit held in Pasig City, DOTr Director IV Joshua Rodriguez said one of the agency’s key programs for the promotion of road safety is its active transport project, with a focus on providing more Class 1 bike lane facilities to the public.
“For context, there are several classes of bike lanes: Class 3 is the shared lane, Class 2 is separated. But, for us, what we are targeting is Class 1. These have a physical separation between the cyclist and the motorized vehicle,” he explained.
