While Khoa Tran continues to deny he had anything to do with killing Reeyaz Habib, the Crown on Monday laid out its theory for murder, describing it as the ultimate “vengeful act” against a neighbour Tran didn’t like. Tran, 36, wrapped up three days of testifying in his own defence without ever being asked how it is that his fingerprints and DNA were found on material covering Habib’s body in the garbage compactor of the Liberty Village townhouse complex where they lived, including on a note next to the body that read: “Please do not open, lots of sharp metal and glass inside from renovation (don’t worry, we wrapped it in fabric.)” Crown attorney Anna Tenhouse suggested during cross-examination Monday that Tran was furious because Habib, a 53-year-old filmmaker, had been complaining about the smoke and smell from Tran’s balcony barbecue, and had told Tran he was going to have him and his wife Isabelle Nguyen kicked out.
