Police in northern Greece have broken a gambling ring that allegedly used other players’ accounts in online betting companies to place illegal bets.

A police statement said a total five people were arrested Friday in Thessalonikki and the northern town of Kilkis on suspicion of criminal fraud, belonging to a criminal organization and money-laundering. Another 48 face charges of complicity in fraud and breaches of betting laws.

Police said the ring is believed to have made at least €170,000 out of its illegal activities since December 2025.

The suspects allegedly placed illegal real-time bets on sporting events with the connivance of registered online gamblers whose accounts they used in exchange for a slice of the winnings or a one-off fee.
