BAGUIO CITY — The Benguet State University College of Information Sciences Student Government joined nationwide calls opposing the appointment of Sen. Joel Villanueva as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Higher, Technical, and Vocational Education (CHTVE), saying students need leaders “rooted in accountability and service” amid worsening economic hardship.

Villanueva was appointed CHTVE chair on May 18 following a major reorganization of the Senate’s leadership and committees. He faces graft, malversation of public funds, falsification of public documents, and direct bribery complaints before the Office of the Ombudsman over his alleged involvement in the multibillion-peso flood control scandal.

In a May 23 statement, the BSU student government backed National Union of Students of the Philippines’ (NUSP) rejection of Villanueva’s appointment and urged state universities and colleges to hold him accountable over his involvement in the flood control controversy instead of issuing congratulatory statements over his automatic membership in governing boards of state universities.
