MANILA, Philippines — Former student political party leaders from the University of the Philippines (UP) – Diliman have urged Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano to resign as Senate president.

Under Cayetano’s leadership, the Senate became a “stage for political theater, confusion and brinkmanship,” they said.

Groups SAMASA and Nagkakaisang Tugon made the joint statement, recalling that the two political parties once stood on the opposite sides of political battles in the history of UP student politics.

Their members said that the recent Senate controversy compelled former student leaders from the parties to set aside their differences “in defense of democratic institutions and accountability.”
