Relatives of a student entered a vocational high school (EPAL) in Piraeus and demanded that the teenager be allowed to sit for exams despite being barred because of excessive absences, according to teachers’ union officials and educators who filed complaints with police.
The incidents took place over two days last week at the 9th EPAL of Piraeus. Teachers said two adults entered the school on May 20 seeking permission for the student to take written exams, despite a decision by the teaching staff that the student’s attendance record was insufficient.
According to the local teachers’ union, ELME Piraeus, the adults disrupted examinations, entered classrooms, intimidated teachers and demanded the names of educators who supported the decision. The union also accused the school principal of undermining the teachers’ ruling by escorting the student into an examination room.
The following day, the student’s mother and aunt returned to the school and again demanded the student be allowed to sit exams, prompting another police intervention.
