Thessaloniki’s metro system will suspend commercial operations for nearly a month beginning May 29 as crews carry out work related to the network’s expansion toward the suburb of Kalamaria, authorities said.
The interruption will last through June 19 to allow completion of key infrastructure works tied to the extension project, officials said.
During the shutdown, the city’s public transport operator, OASTH, will introduce special bus services to meet increased transportation demand, based on the model used during a previous temporary suspension of metro operations.
Officials said the special M1 bus line will resume service, operating as a semi-express route along the metro system’s main service corridor.
The Thessaloniki Metro began operations in late 2024 after years of delays and is considered one of the city’s largest public infrastructure projects. The extension to Kalamaria is expected to improve connections to southeastern districts of Greece’s second-largest city.
