The crucial role of ports, shipyards, and supply chains in the development of the cruise industry was highlighted by Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises, during his participation in the first panel of Naftemporiki’s 10th Shipping Conference, which focused on ports, shipyards, and logistics.Onorato stressed that cruising is not a separate world from shipping but an integral part of it. “Cruising requires ports, shipyards, and logistics. We do not only transport people, but also all the products necessary for the operation of ships and destinations,” he noted.He also referred to his long-standing relationship with the Greek shipping community, noting that he has been working with Greek shipowners since 1985.98% of our vessels are built in EuropeThe head of MSC Cruises noted that the group has been active in the cruise industry for approximately 25 years and that the sector is growing at a different pace compared to other segments of shipping. He placed particular emphasis on the importance of the European shipbuilding industry, revealing that 98% of MSC Cruises’ vessels continue to be built within the European Union.“We must preserve this expertise and add value to it,” he underlined.Criticism of the regulatory framework Gianni Onorato emphasized that the industry is ready to comply with rules and environmental requirements; however, he warned that excessive regulatory pressure may act as a deterrent. “When the regulatory framework only punishes and does not provide perspective, when there are such large differences in taxation from country to country, then it becomes difficult for us to grow,” he stated. As he noted, Europe needs more balanced policies that support the competitiveness of both the shipping and shipbuilding industries, without undermining the sector’s development potential.
