The handling of immunity cases is increasingly politicised within the European Parliament
MEPs have rejected a request to lift the immunity of Angelika Niebler, a long-serving member of the chamber and head of Germany’s Christian Social Union delegation within the European People’s Party.
A majority of MEPs – 309 in total – backed a recommendation by the legal affairs committee (JURI), which had previously voted against waiving Niebler’s parliamentary immunity, based on a request from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Niebler is a Brussels veteran and one of the CSU’s most influential power brokers in the European Parliament, where she has sat since 1999 and now leads the Bavarian party’s delegation inside the EPP.
