MANILA, Philippines – A lawmaker on Monday said any shifts in Senate leadership must not derail the chamber’s convening as an impeachment court to try Vice President Sara Duterte, amid reports of a looming shake-up.

In a statement, Kabataan Rep. Renee Co said Duterte’s impeachment trial “must proceed at once” in the upper chamber despite the chamber being plunged into chaos, warning that delays would be a disservice to Filipinos.

“The impeachment process should not be hindered by any turmoil in the Senate leadership,” she said in Filipino. “It is a time for accountability, not for sympathy or politicking.”
