The NMA, however, dismissed the operation as unlawful, calling it a “reckless invasion” and “organised lawlessness.”
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has again berated operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after they violently invaded the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), assaulted medical personnel, and arrested a senior consultant in what the association describes as a “gestapo-style operation.”
In a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Olayinka Atilola, under the leadership of Dr. (Prof.) Afekhide Ernest Omoti, the NMA said the incident occurred on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, and involved the brutalisation of doctors and other health workers while they were on duty.
At the center of the controversy is Prof. Eyo Ekpe, Deputy Director of the Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC) at UUTH and a senior cardiothoracic surgeon. He was reportedly arrested and detained by EFCC operatives over what the agency described as delays in authenticating a medical report linked to an accused person in its custody.
