The NMA recalled that hospital workers and other medical personnel who attempted to intervene during the arrest were also assaulted and detained.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State chapter, has declared an indefinite strike and demanded the prosecution of operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) involved in the violent invasion of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) and assaulting medical personnel.
The association described the operation carried out by the anti-graft agency at the teaching hospital as “barbaric, degrading and inhumane,” accusing the operatives of brutalising doctors and disrupting medical services within the facility.
The outrage followed the arrest of Prof Eyo Ekpe, a cardiothoracic surgeon and Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at UUTH, alongside other staff members during the controversial raid.
In a communiqué issued after its emergency virtual meeting, the Akwa Ibom NMA condemned what it called a “gross violation of the sanctity of the hospital environment,” insisting that hospitals should never become theatres of violence and intimidation by security agencies.
