Police in Crete arrested five people early Friday as part of an investigation into counterfeit banknotes after officers discovered fake currency during a vehicle search near Iraklio, authorities said.

The arrests were made at a fuel station in the Ammoudara area, where police stopped the suspects and searched the vehicle they were traveling in, according to local media reports.

During the search, officers seized two counterfeit 200-euro banknotes. Police also found about 1,000 euros in cash, which investigators are examining to determine whether it may be linked to transactions involving counterfeit money.

The five suspects were taken into custody and transferred to the relevant police authorities. A preliminary investigation is ongoing to determine the origin of the fake banknotes and whether the suspects may be connected to other similar cases.
