Authorities on the southern island of Crete have broken a criminal organization suspected of widespread fraud against the European Union, livestock theft and extortion.
A police operation launched early Monday and still under way has so far led to eight arrests.
Police believe that the gang allegedly made at least €270,000 from its illegal activities. No further information on the nature of the alleged fraud against the EU was immediately available.
In recent months, investigations by Greek and European authorities have led to more than a thousand people in various parts of Greece being prosecuted for alleged EU farm subsidy fraud involving claims for fictitious livestock or crop farming.
