The last of a series of meetings between European and Yemeni higher education institutions will take place in Cairo this week to discuss international cooperation with Yemen’s war-torn system. The meetings on 13-14 May will discuss links with European universities and now the quality of education can be maintained at Yemen’s universities despite the destruction and 12 years of civil war.

The Yemeni Higher Education Leadership Development project was an urgent request by Yemeni Universities to help them overcome some of the difficulties and the isolation problems created by the country’s recent history. Higher education sustained serious destruction and was not considered a priority because of the humanitarian emergency. The lack of security and qualified employment opportunities also discouraged students from participating in academic life.

A specific objective of the project is to enhance Yemeni higher education institutions can continue to work at international level, through the establishment of International Relation Offices with partner Yemeni universities. Partnership with European universities is hoped to give support and monitoring to ensure Yemen’s universities remain at a good standard.
