MANILA, Philippines — The family of late former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Thursday said his name should be invoked with “genuine respect” and not only when “convenient” or “politically useful.”

His kin made the statement in response to recent remarks of newly installed Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano who reportedly mentioned his close relationship with Enrile, whom he said he considered as an uncle.

“Our father’s legacy, sacrifices, and decades of service to the nation should never be revisited only when convenient, politically useful, or publicly advantageous. He deserved sincerity in life, dignity in death, and peace in memory,” they said in a statement.
