MANILA, Philippines — A few weeks after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) announced a 79% likelihood of an El Niño developing between June and August and persisting into next year, water levels in nine major dams have already declined, with some now below “normal level.”

Based on government data, most dams across Luzon recorded lower water elevations on Thursday, May 14, compared to Wednesday, May 13, raising concerns over prolonged dry conditions that Pagasa said could lead to “negative impacts such as droughts and dry spells.”
