A family from Navalpattu Anna Nagar in Tiruchi is in mourning after three of its members died when a cruise boat capsized at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday evening.

Kamaraj, 38, who had been working at the Ordnance Factory in Jabalpur, his wife Karkuzhali, 38, and their younger son Tamilventhan, 5, died in the accident. Their elder son, Puvitharan, 11, was rescued, and is said to be safe.

The body of Karkuzhali has been recovered. Efforts are on to retrieve the remaining bodies. Sources in the Revenue Department said the remains of the victims were expected to be brought to Tiruchi for performing the last rites.

Kamaraj had been working in Jabalpur for several years. His relatives from Tiruppur district had come to visit him, and the family had gone on an outing on Thursday when the tragedy occurred.

Speaking to The Hindu, S. Sujith, a colleague of Kamaraj at the Ordnance Factory, who has been by the family’s side since the tragedy struck, said neighbours and relatives had gathered at the family home, grief-stricken and waiting for further news.
