Three members of a family — a man and his two sons — were killed and a woman was injured after a car collided with their two-wheeler on the East Coast Road near Sethubavachatram in Thanjavur district on Sunday evening.
The victims were identified as P. Kalidas, 35, of Somanathapattinam, his sons Raghavan, 10, and Darshith, 3, and his wife Ramya, 30. The family was returning home on a two-wheeler after visiting Ramya’s mother in Mandiripattinam within the Thiruvathevan panchayat when the accident occurred.
According to police, the car was driven by Arokia Raj, 65, of Perumpannaiyur near Kudavasal in Tiruvarur district. He was returning from a family function at a church in Ramanathapuram when a goat suddenly crossed the road near Mandiripattinam. In an attempt to avoid hitting the animal, the driver swerved, lost control, and rammed the two-wheeler.
All four on the two-wheeler sustained serious injuries. Darshith died on the spot. Kalidas and Raghavan died at the Thanjavur Government Medical College and Hospital. Ramya is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Manamelkudi in Pudukkottai district.
The bodies were taken to the Peravurani Government Hospital for post-mortem. Sethubavachatram police have registered a case and are investigating.
