In a shocking incident, a couple, C. Muniyaraj and Aishwarya, who were reportedly in debt, allegedly murdered a 25-year-old woman, G. Kalaiselvi, who lived in their neighbourhood, to steal her gold jewellery, near Srivilliputtur on Tuesday (April 28, 2026).

Aishwarya’s cousins, Govindaraj and Ajithkumar, who were allegedly called to dispose of the body, alerted the police later in the night about the murder, leading to the arrest of the couple.

The police said that Kalaiselvi’s husband Ganesan, of V.K. Pudur in Tenkasi, worked as a gangman in the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB). The couple lived in a rented house in Vaithyalingapuram under the Vanniyampatti police station limits. Over time, they got acquainted with Muniyaraj and Aishwarya, who were living next door.

Muniyaraj, who was a mill worker, was in debt, according to the police.

On Tuesday, when Kalaiselvi visited their house, Aishwarya asked her if she could borrow the gold jewellery the former was wearing, so she could pledge it and repay their loans.
